Chapter 28

Now…Science lab

Sarah closed the door and turned to leave. She’d turned off the camera and made an unplanned visit to the old man. He tried to continue his pretense with her until she mentioned the camera.

“Come on old man, I’ve been watching you on the camera.” She prodded his foot.

At this his eyes flew open. “Seriously? A camera in an exam room?” he sat up without much effort.

“Yes,” she confirmed.

“Well if that’s the case aren’t you worried about being in here?” he questioned her.

“No, the cameras don’t record, I was watching in real time.” She looked around the white sterile room. “This place hasn’t been used much recently. People tend to forget things.”

“But not you.” he stated.

“No, not me.” She confirmed.

“Well then, how can I help you? I expect you aren’t here to let me know about the cameras out of the kindness of your heart.” He crossed his arms across his chest.

“No. I want to help you and Harlow. I also want to find out what your plan is.”

Liam couldn’t keep the surprise off his face. “You what?” he cried out.

“Shhh. Not so loud, they will hear you.” She admonished the older man. “I’m here to help you.”

“This is a set up right? Your father put you up to this?” he eyed her suspiciously.

With a big sigh she sat in the chair. “No, he didn’t. He doesn’t know I’m here.” She denied his accusations. “I am tired of all this. I want to put an end to it. I don’t want to go back to Earth. This planet is my home, these scientists, and even the specimen, are my family. I know that sounds weird. I have never met many of them, but I grew up with them. Watching them on the screens and reading about their progress and their lives.”

Liam sat back down on the edge of the bed. “Yes, I know what you mean. It’s not weird. It’s how the rest of us that rebelled felt. It’s why we fought so hard against the Expiration Date Code.”

“I don’t know why, but they want Harlow really bad. They wanted her brother also but he died in the crash. They were going to study his body and sent a shuttle back for all the bodies, but his wasn’t there when they arrived. Father thinks an animal drug it off. One of the bodies was missing a head and they weren’t able to find it.” She rambled on.

“Sarah,” he waited until she was finished. “What are you doing in here? They will be back soon.”

“No, they changed your vital sign checks to every hour since nothing had changed over the last few days.” She gave him a sly grin. “You are a really good actor. So anyway, I want to help you two get away. I have suites hidden for you both. I will get an ID card off one of the med techs and slip it into one of the suits. I can let you out before the next check, but it will be your responsibility to get to Harlow and get her out.
